In 2018, Rebecca (Nigeria) became the face of a Damien Foundation’s campaign to raise awareness about the severe stigma people with leprosy have to deal with. In the story behind the campaign, Rebecca looks back on a lonely life of solitude. Yet, she’s hopeful. Thanks to awareness campaigns, people no longer turn their back at her.

Rebecca.

For more than 30 years, Rebecca has been living in a so called ‘colony for people with leprosy’ in Ogobos. She has overcome the disease and is no longer contagious. Yet, the fight against the stigma and discrimination is still ongoing.
